The Butcharts, an enthusiastic family of cement sellers, mined limestone from Victoria Island in the early 20th century. Jennie Butchart proposes to turn empty quarries into unique sunken gardens. Her husband Robert collects ornamental birds to live in the gardens, and her grandfather also works to develop the gardens as an international tourist destination. Visit today and explore the National Historic Site, still owned by the Butchart family.
Explore different parts of the gardens to appreciate all the sights. Visit the Sunken Garden, located on the site of an ancient quarry, as well as Japanese and Italian-themed gardens. The plants that grow here will change depending on the season. Come and see the many colorful tulips in the spring or witness the fruits of beauty and acerre, which show off the wonderful colors of autumn.
Find garden activities for guests of all ages. Let your child ride the hand-painted Pink Carousel in the Children's Pavilion. Relax on one of the boats that sail around Tod Inlet Water. The captains of the ship provided information to the passengers as they sailed around the lake. Buy a ticket in the summer to see the gardens at night. Captivating lights in every shade can make trees and flowers amazing. Try to look at the Christmas decorations, the fifth magical period in the gardens.
Relax on the lawn and listen to music performances. Rock bands, symphony orchestras and world players perform in the modern pavilion throughout the summer. Every Saturday night during the summer, a unique fireworks display completes the calendar of various parties.
Butchart Gardens is a short drive from Victoria, less than a 30-minute drive from downtown. Take a bus from the city or go here and park on site. Admission prices change from time to time, discounts are available for children and large groups.
